is El Paso safe?

My wife and I are visiting El Paso and NM next year. We've heard that some border cities like Nuevo Laredo are unsafe due to Drug trafficking, is this still the case? So, is Juarez safe to visit? Are there some areas that should be avoided? Thanks in advance for the info.

El Paso is a fairly safe city. If I am not wrong I think El Paso Texas was voted one of the safest cities in the states. Having said this, I would suggest not to stray from the main streets, and do not take any shortcuts or offers from people to drive you anywhere.

Also, try to avoid walking late at night but this is typical with all downtown areas, especially on the weekend when you'll get crowds of drunken college students going to the bars.

Regarding crossing into Juarez from El Paso, most people advise not to cross into Juarez, but I have crossed with friends and by myself and was okay.
