I'd say that vacation rentals like villas and cottages are very popular in the Caribbean and the best thing about them is that aren't more expensive than hotel resorts. Apartments, townhouses, cottages and condos are the most affordable than a villa.

By the way, if you plan to book a Caribbean vacation rental through the internet, most of the sites you encounter will either be property owner's forums or third party agent sites, which are more expensive but they give you the added security if problems should arise.
