| Washington DC Washington DC is the heartbeat of the entire United States nation. Attractions here aren't hard to come by, it's getting it all into one trip that's the problem. Stop by the National Mall and see the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives. Sit at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Walk along the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Enjoy all the US Capitol has to offer. |

| Scheduled for tour on 23 Oct. Email from Congressman's office listed lots of restrictions on what could be carried. Where do folks store stuff that they can't carry on tour (purses, cameras, tobacco products, etc)? We will obviously want access to these items before and after tour. |

| There is no place to leave your personal belongings in the White House , I recommend leaving them at the Union Station left luggage facility while touring the White House, then you can pick them up afterwards. Not convenient, but better than leaving it on the ground. It's on first floor, near where the the commuter trains arrive. Best Lockers (202) 898-1592 Street Level - Gate A-Luggage storage. Station address: 701 First St. NE, Washington, DC 20002 If you are driving is only about 12 minutes away. Driving directions from the White house to the station: From: White House-1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20006- 2.2 mi 1. Head east toward E Executive Ave NW 0.1 mi . 2. Slight left at Alexander Hamilton Pl NW 410 ft 3.Turn right at 15th St NW 344 ft, 4. Turn left at Pennsylvania Ave NW 0.8 mi 4 mins 5. Turn left at 6th St NW/US-1 0.2 mi 1 min, 6. Turn right at E St NW 0.7 mi 4 mins 7. Turn right at Columbus Circle NE 0.1 mi, 1 min, 8. Turn left to stay on Columbus Circle NE 482 ft 9. Slight left 20 ft to Union Station I hope this helps! | Thanks for your response, ftuely. Hopefully, it will provide some guidance for others, as we did the White House tour - as scheduled - in October. Turns out that since we were two couples, we just split up. The Park Service ranger didn't hold us strictly to the scheduled time of the tour, just checked to see that we were indeed on the list as having arranged for the tour with our congressperson. So my in-laws went first, while we held onto their stuff. Then - the downside - they had to walk back to the entrance point from the exit point (a couple of long blocks), and took our stuff while my wife and I took the tour. In-laws had meantime re-walked the two long blocks back to the exit to meet back up with us. We weren't driving, which made the Union Station solution problematical. (Took the Metro into town from Vienna, VA.) Still don't know what a single tourist could do to easily comply with restrictions, but even a couple could handle logistics like we did. Certainly would cut down on the "sharing" of the experience, tho'. After doing the tour, I can't really come up with an easy fix for this problem. Best possible would be storage lockers available at entrance, but the gate IS an entrance to the White House, and some decorum has to be maintained. And there would still be the backtracking from exit point to get back to whatever storage option had been provided. Can't expect Park Service to assume responsibility for personal possessions by "checking' them, then transporting to exit point for return to owners; look at hassles airlines have with claims for lost stuff. Bottom-line best bet is probably to travel with at least one buddy.... |
