Visiting Wisconsin this summer

I am planning a trip with the wife as follows: 5 days in Madison and 7 in Milwaukee in the first half of June; while in Milwaukee we want to go to Door County for a weekend.

While staying in Madison I'd like to rent a car for a day and drive somewhere interesting. Maybe Belmont but I don't know yet if the original state capitol will be open for visitors while I'm in Madison. Any suggestions for places in rural and semi-rural Wisconsin that we could go to?

There's some interesting scenery driving in far western wisconsin up highway 61 around Boscobel, and up towards Viroqua - and on great river road as well.

Galena and Dubuque are also interesting places you must visit as they are quite historic, though in all honesty larger towns like Galena are somewhat a bit of a tourist trap.

If you want to take scenic drives, head northwest on Highway 14 and get lost on arguably the best backroads in Wisconsin. You will encounter Amish folks, charming little villages, giant hills, and stunning scenery all around you.
