Gastown Vancouver

Gastown Vancouver is a national historic site of Canada and the oldest neighborhood in the city. Situated in the northeast corner of Downtown Vancouver next to the Eastside neighborhood, Gastown was the first downtown core and its development and expansion was an integral part of the overall city’s eventual growth. It was named for a man named Jack “Gassy” Deighton, the person responsible, of all things, for opening the town’s first saloon. Gastown Vancouver quickly grew from the late 1800s into the early part of the twentieth century as a center of industry. The area is now a popular attraction for both residents and tourists, as there are many exciting Gastown attractions and destinations for nightlife, entertainment, and dining. The Vancouver steam clock remains an iconic attraction in the old district, but Gastown is now much better known for its vibrant nightlife and tourist attractions.

The Vancouver steam clock is definitely worth seeing if you are visiting this area of the city, as it one of very few of these kinds of clocks that are still operating in the world. The Vancouver steam clock is not at all one of the oldest attractions in Gastown Vancouver, but one of the most notable because of the fact that it is partly powered by steam, a convention which most people are certainly not used to seeing. A fellow named Raymond Saunders designed several of these for the Vancouver area, primarily for aesthetic appeal, as the city was undergoing a major period of renovation and gentrification in the 1960s and 1970s. It may not sound like the most exciting thing you will see in Vancouver, but it is one of the things to do in Gastown if you get the chance.

Gastown Vancouver is more than just an amazing area to enjoy some of the best dining and shopping in the city. Among the wide variety of things to do in Gastown, there is a selection of historical sites that may also strike your fancy. For example, Byrne’s Block is the oldest brick building in Gastown. It was constructed by George Byrnes after a fire burned most of the city to the ground in 1886. For those interested in the history of Vancouver and its oldest district, this may be a nice diversion. Hotel Europe and the Landing are two more good examples of historical buildings in the Gastown district that tend to draw a good number of tourists.

Among the other things to do in Gastown, there is also a vibrant nightlife scene. In fact, this is one of the most popular nightlife areas in the city along with Yaletown and Kitsilano. You will be able to find a club, bar, or restaurant that appeals to you and your group with no problem. There are late night dance clubs where you can enjoy themed parties, wild events, and throbbing music, or you can simply sit back and relax and one of the more casual establishments that can also be found in abundance in this area. Gastown is one of the most enjoyable areas of Vancouver and a neighborhood that you should definitely consider visiting.
