Shawnigan Lake has long been a popular place to get away from it all in British Columbia. Found approximately 28 miles north of Victoria, this village doubles its population during the summer season, as people come looking to enjoy numerous outdoor activities and some rest and relaxation. On the lake for which the village is named, fishing and kayaking are among the preferred pursuits, and thanks to area parks such as Memory Island Provincial Park, land-based activities such as picnicking and birdwatching can also be enjoyed.
For more than 100 years, Victoria residents especially have been escaping to the waterfront resort community of Shawnigan Lake. Over time, numerous cottages and cabins have sprung up on or near the water. It is possible to rent Shawnigan Lake cabins and enjoy your own rewarding escape, just as Victoria residents have been doing for years. And should the charm of the area get the best of you, which is likely, purchasing a private cabin and enjoying repeat visits might be the next route to take.
There are many reasons why staying in a cabin or cottage on Shawnigan Lake can be so enticing. For starters, the picturesque beauty of the area is hard to deny. Also, there is no shortage of fun activity options. Forests line much of the lake's shoreline, and mountains rise up all around, only adding beauty and depth to the overall scene. Numerous trails provide terrific hiking opportunities, and there are plenty of spots to take it all in from. The view of the lake and the area from the top of Old Mount Baldy is especially worth highlighting.
While spending some time in the Shawnigan Lake area, visitors can do much more than hike. Boating, kayaking, and canoeing are among the waterbased activity options, and angling enthusiasts will be happy to know that there are good recreational fishing opportunities. Fish that are found in Shawnigan Lake include smallmouth bass, kokanee salmon, rainbow trout, and cutthroat trout. On dry land, horseback riding and mountain biking on the area trails is possible, and birding enthusiasts can satisfy hours on end looking for interesting avian creatures, especially if they are armed with a good set of binoculars. During the winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are what many Shawnigan Lake residents and visitors look to do in their free time.
Plenty of tantalizing Shawnigan Lake rentals are available, though it might be hard to secure one in the summer if arrangements are not made well in advance. In addition to cabins and cottages, these rentals include larger homes. The rates vary considerably, and this has a lot to do with the amenity differences.
A rustic cabin with few frills is all that some Shawnigan Lake visitors will need, while others will find it too hard to pass on a home that features multiple bedrooms, a full kitchen, private laundry facilities, and more. Either way, the lake and the village will be close by, and should the urge to enjoy a side trip set in, other Vancouver Island destinations such as Victoria and the Pacific Rim National Park can also be reached with relative ease.
