Cancun Airport

The Cancun Airport has continued to expand since it opened in the 1970s. Among the most recent additions was a new terminal. Known as Terminal 3, this relatively new terminal opened in 2007 and is largely responsible for the airport’s reputation as one of the busiest airports in Mexico and the Caribbean. In fact, with the establishment of Terminal 3, the Cancun Airport can now handle double the passengers that it could beforehand. In relation to the airport’s facilities, they are modern and consistently rank among the best airport facilities in all of Mexico. In both Terminal 3 and Terminal 2, you can find duty-free shops, a variety of restaurants, money-exchange services, medical services, and even a spa. Other general Cancun Airport facilities include VIP rooms, a business lounge, lockers, public phones, parking, and ground transportation.

Knowing the layout of the Cancun Airport can help you make sense of things upon arrival. Your airline may have an airport map in the back pages of the in-flight magazine. It’s a good idea to take a look at it to refresh your memory just before landing. In relation to the three different terminals, it should be noted that Terminal 1 has been used by charter airlines that operate out of North America and is currently closed for renovation. Terminal 2 handles some international flights and all flights from domestic airlines. The newer Terminal 3 primarily deals with international flights out of North America and Europe, and this is where most international travelers arrive. In Terminal 3, the immigration area is on the lower floor. This floor is also where outbound travelers will find the check in counters, an American Express, and medical services. The upper floor is where the spa and most of the terminal’s shops and restaurants are found. Basically, the upper floor is where travelers who have time to burn end up spending the bulk of their time. Terminal 2 is rather similar to Terminal 3 in terms of what it has to offer and how its facilities are configured. Both terminals are fairly easy to navigate, and those who wish to move from terminal to terminal can rely on free shuttle service.
