All-inclusive luxury, turquoise waters, sugary white beaches and a location in the middle of the action, Hotel Riu Cancun 5* is ideally suited for Caribbean vacations.
Nestled on the north shores of the Yucatan Peninsula, the all-inclusive resort is in the heart of Zona Hotelera in Cancun. This is the tourist hotspot where many of the clubs, shopping, and restaurants are located, plus the crystalline beaches along the Caribbean Sea are ready for you to step out and feel the sun on your shoulders. Costa Maya and amazing ruins are just to the south.
The moment we stepped out of the shuttle at Riu Cancun, we felt we were on vacation. The staff immediately took over our bags and welcomed us with a free cocktail and smiling faces.
RIU Hotel Room
We were given a room that overlooked the pool and beach which was nice to be part of the action but yet not too loud and secluded. In total, the resort has 559 rooms and suites, mostly with ocean views and king-sized beds. They’re well-equipped with central air, in-room WiFi, and mini-bars, along with a terrace or patio.
As with all inclusive resorts drinks and food are free, but what sets Riu Cancun apart is the quality of their food and dining options. While we were there, we tried Sushi and Italian but our favorite was buffet because of the quality and variety of selections available. The day begins with a buffet breakfast, complete with chef demonstrations, as well as continental breakfast set-ups for grab and go. Lunch and dinner buffets are served every night, and diners can choose from the menus at Kulinarium, the gourmet restaurant; Kawachi, the Asian restaurant; Italian food at La Toscana; and the steakhouse. Bars are located throughout the resort, ready to serve up drinks and sports to watch.
At dinner, formal dress is required, which means long pants and no sleeveless t-shirts. Ladies can use their discretion for the best dress. If you’re more into keeping things casual, snacks can be ordered 24 hours a day. Beverages are stocked throughout the day, with local and import flavors of both hard and soft drinks.

Things to do
Because this is an all-inclusive resort, there’s more included in the package price as long as you’re wearing the required wristband. There’s three swimming pools, plus an infinity pool, swim terrace, and swim-up bar. For an additional fee, book a relaxing treatment or hairstyling appointment at Renova Spa.
The entertainment and pool during the day was especially fun. During the day, there are dance parties, volleyball, and sailing. Although we are not huge drinkers, we did see many people making new friends and buying each other rounds of drinks, free of course. But still the favorite time of most people is just lounging around in the sun.
In addition, the all-inclusive resort offers guests the chance to explore more of the resort. While they're having fun, guests can workout at the gym and relax in the whirlpool bath. They can sign up for an introduction to scuba diving, held at the resort’s pool. Check out the catamaran, canoes, or snorkels before heading to the Caribbean sea. Take note that the watersports equipment, including the paddleboard and windsurfing gear, was pretty old. If you’re really into watersports, you might want to check out one of the outfitters nearby for the best equipment and lessons.
Nighttime at Hotel Riu Cancun 5*, the fun continues with live music and entertainment programs, plus free entry to the Pacha nightclub.
While there is plenty to keep you busy at the resort, it would be a shame to miss what’s going on in Cancun. The hotel zone is packed with bustling places to shop, eat, and party. With a little time, you can reach Mayan ruins, including Xcaret eco-archaeological park, Tulum, and Chichen Itza. At El Rey, charming iguanas climb over the ruins, a charming sight you probably can’t find at home.
The one day we did want to get away, we took a ferry to Isla Mujeres which was only 20 minutes away. It was just 15 pesos by bus and a $20f ferry ride for this great little island off of Cancun. Here, you can rent a golf cart ($35 USD day), drive around island to visit the turtle rescue site, dolphin sanctuary, old ruins – or just hang on the beach and while sipping a cold one and eating local seafood inexpensively.
