Cozumel Ferry

Cozumel ferry transport is a relative breeze if you know what you are doing, including where to buy tickets and where to find the Cozumel auto ferry if you are transporting a motor vehicle as well. There are two ferries to Cozumel that run back and forth directly from Playa del Carmen. Although it is widely believed that you can take a ferry directly from Cancun to Cozumel and vice versa, this is a misnomer. If you are heading from Cancun to Cozumel you will need to take the ferry from Playa del Carmen. If you are departing from Cozumel for the mainland you can take the ferry to Playa del Carmen or an air taxi from Cozumel International Airport. The short flight is almost guaranteed to be more expensive. Simply do your best to book a Cozumel ferry in advance if you know you will be taking a trip to the mainland in order to save some money and hassle.
Both of the ferries to Cozumel are equipped with comfortable amenities such as air conditioning, snacks, and beverages. You can purchase beer, soda, or juice and there are even televisions aboard the ferries if you get tired of the stunning Caribbean waters all around you. If you are worrying about which Cozumel ferry is better than the next you are putting too much thought into your planning. Instead, make sure you are getting a good deal on your airfare and accommodations and just take one either of the two ferries to Cozumel. They rotate passengers out about every 10 or 15 minutes so you are sure to find a ferry for your final leg of travel to your island destination with very little hassle.
You can purchase your tickets at booths around Playa del Carmen. There are plenty of these booths near the dock. In Playa del Carmen the dock where you catch ferries to Cozumel is only a block and a half from downtown and the main square (or Zocalo). Tickets can be purchased on the Cozumel side right where you board the ferry in the town of San Miguel. The ferry ride between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen takes between 30 and 45 minutes.
If you are in search of Cozumel auto ferry services you will need to look no farther than the International Pier located about ten miles south of San Miguel. This is where all of the Cozumel auto ferry traffic docks when first arriving in Cozumel. The Calica Pier (just south of Playa del Carmen) is where the ferries that transport motor vehicles depart.
Taking ferries to Cozumel is a pretty standard part of many experiences on the island. If your international flight is not headed directly to CMZ then you are likely stopping over at Cancun and making a drive by bus or car to Playa del Carmen in order to catch the ferry over to Cozumel. By this time you will be ready to get out of the plane and the car and the ferry ride on the open water will be a welcome final leg of the journey.
