La Paz Beaches

La Paz Mexico beaches are some of the most beautiful in all of the Baja Peninsula – some say in all of Mexico. The beaches along the long seafront Malecon are very convenient, and are excellent for swimming and sunbathing. Over the last few years, they have been improved considerably, with daily cleaning, and fresh imported sand. There are also palapas for shade. They are good choices if you just can’t get out of town. However, most visitors choose to take the short drive north of town to truly spectacular beaches. The best begin about three miles north, and then stretch for another 15 miles to Playa Tecolote.

The first of the La Paz Mexico beaches north of town is El Corumel. It is still within the harbor and an easy walk from downtown.  This is a good place for family snorkeling, and there are palapas for shade as well as food and beverage outlets. Next comes El Tesoro (about seven miles from town), which is also an excellent beach for children with shallow water quite far out. There is a restaurant, palapas, and an outlet for kayak rental. Pichilingue Beach is the port for Baja ferries from Mazatlan and Topolobampo on the mainland. It’s a nice beach, but not as popular because of the commercial harbor. By about 15 miles north of town, you reach Playa Balandra, a beautiful beach with lovely landscapes and the famous balancing rock formation that you will see on many La Paz postcards. There are no palapas or formal restaurants, but vendors will show up during the peak season and on weekends. They will sell food, beverages, and beach umbrellas. There are also barbecue pits in case you want to cook your own picnic. Just past this beach is the largest and most popular of the northern beaches, Playa El Tecolote. It offers palapas for shade, two large restaurants, and rental outlets for jet skis, and many other water sports. Speak to the restaurants about the palapas located between them. You can usually have them free if you have a restaurant bill of more than 200 pesos. In addition to the facilities and wonderful sandy beach, El Tecolote boasts great views of Isla Espiritu Sancto (Sacred Spirit Island) across the bay.
