Playa Olas Altas

Playa Olas Altas has been considered one of the best beaches in Mazatlan since the 1950s, and it’s particularly popular among the many surfers who come for the great waves found here. Olas Altas is also home to the beginning of the Malecon, a seaside promenade that runs the length of the city, making it easy to access plenty of great attractions from this area as well.

Aptly named for the excellent surfing, Olas Altas Mazatlan is translated as “high wave beach,” and while this stretch of sand offers a bit of privacy during the week for vacationers, the weekends bring a larger crowd of locals and tourists alike; surfers congregate for the lofty waves, and thrill-seeking cliff divers practice their sports for tips.

Playa Olas Altas offers little to no rental equipment for the various beach activities that are popular among many patrons, so it isn’t the best place for travelers planning on snorkeling or scuba diving. The particular waters along Olas Altas Mazatlan are not quite suitable for swimming, as the waves are more violent than what is appropriate for the average swimmer and crosscurrents make the waves dangerous. It’s a much better place for sunbathers to relax and watch the action.

Many tourists choose to stay in the Olas Altas Mazatlan area because of the inexpensive choices of hotels. Charming cafes offer refreshments and meals for visitors of the Playa Olas Altas, and nearby, the historic downtown area presents ample opportunities for strolling and enjoying the views and architecture. From the adventurous surfers to the captivating sights, Olas Altas Mazatlan is definitely a must-see for vacationers in the city.
