Things to do in Mexico City

While many tourists flock to the beach communities during their Mexico getaways, a more authentic taste of real Mexican life can be found in Mexico City, one of the largest cities in the world. Attractions in Mexico City are much less about relaxing in the sun than discovering the culture of Mexico. Of all the things to do in Mexico City, here are a few of the best.

Mexico Tours of Architecture

Mexico City is known for buildings that tell the story of this great city’s history. Gape at the Catedral Metropolitana, or take a walking tour around the Centro district to discover buildings that make discovering architecture one of the major Mexico City tourist attractions.

Teotihuacán

Perhaps the most famous of the ruins of Mexico, Teotihuacán is found very near Mexico City, making it a must-see if you are in the area. Taking in the Pyramid of the Sun as the sun goes down may be one of the most memorable things to do in Mexico City.

Bosque de Chapultepec

This public park has beautiful trees that make it a welcome oasis of relaxation amid the busyness of the metropolis. But trees aren’t all: three lakes, a zoo, and a castle make this stand out among attractions in Mexico City.

Alameda Central

Another of Mexico City’s nicer parks, this is a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch between visits to other Mexico City tourist attractions.

Zocalo

This square in the center of the city is a glimpse into modern Mexican life. Rest in the square as workers and students hustle to their destinations or stop to chat. Have lunch at Zocalo, and the bustling activity around you will inspire you to take a siesta, which is also one of the great things to do in Mexico City after an authentic mid-day meal.

Museu de Arte Moderno

The Museum of Modern Art boasts works by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and many other masters of recent Mexican art. You will not be disappointed with a trip here, for the masterpieces found within make this unlike any of the other Mexico City tourist attractions.

Coyoacan

Take the time to explore this hip section of Mexico City, which includes many of the museums and other culturally-minded things to do in Mexico City.

Museo Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo is one of the most famous artists in Mexican history. Her twentieth century contributions to Mexican culture are astounding, and you can see many of them here at the home where she lived most of her life. For art fans, this is not to be missed among attractions in Mexico City.

Plaza de las Tres Culturas

This is a square within Mexico City where you can see examples of three separate cultures through architecture: an ancient Aztec ruin is found here, as well as a Spanish Cathedral, and a contemporary (1960’s) housing structure and government building. Each of these reflects a time in Mexican history, making this one of the more interesting and reflective things to do in Mexico City.

Palacio de Bellas Artes

This performing arts center is a destination both for its own beauty and for the quality of performances that are shown here. Taking in a concert at the Bellas Artes is a real treat among Mexico City tourist attractions.
