Tlalpan Mexico City

Tlalpan Mexico City is an area of several small towns south of the city center. The district of Tlalpan and Pedregal is known for being a quiet destination with cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the city’s history. Home to the Ajusco volcanic range, this neighborhood contains one of the largest mountains in greater Mexico City. At more than 13,000 feet, the Ajusco Mountains are an impressive site. If you’re looking for a lesser-known neighborhood to get a feel for Mexico City’s past, look for hotels in Tlalpan and stay for a day or two.

Like the capital city itself, Tlalpan Mexico City has a historic center of its own that is worth a visit. The Centro Historico de Tlalpan has a few attractions, including the Plaza de la Constitucion (it’s main square, also called the zócalo), the municipal hall, the mercado publico (public market), and several churches. This historic center of Tlalpan and Pedregal is only six blocks by six blocks, and it can easily be explored on foot. A map is available in the small tourist booth in the zócalo. After you’ve seen the historic and religious attractions, you will probably have worked up an appetite. Cafetlan is known for authentic food and acoustic music.

Hotels in Tlalpan will make discovering this authentic side of Mexico City a breeze. There is one four-star option, the Radisson Paraiso. Other hotels in Tlalpan include the hotel Costa del Sol and the Hotel Pedregal. Call ahead to make reservations and secure the best possible rate. The Tlalpan and Pedregal district borders the Coyoacan neighborhood, so it is possible to explore this cultural area and popular museums, such as the Frida Kahlo museum and the home of Leon Trotsky, without too much hassle.

Outdoor recreation is another popular activity in Tlalpan Mexico City. The Bosque de Tlalpan (forest of Tlalpan) is home to a variety of hiking and jogging trails. It’s very pleasant to have a picnic in this area, especially if you are visiting during the spring, as the forest floor tends to be blanketed with colorful wildflowers. You may encounter some interesting wildlife on your hike as well, including armadillos, rabbits, woodpeckers, doves, and deer. The wide range of altitudes also results in a great variety of plant life. From pines and firs to wildflowers, the flora of this area will only add to the pleasure of your hike.

Located a little less than fifteen miles from downtown Mexico City, Tlalpan is on one of the farthest borders of the district. An indigenous language was traditionally spoken in this area, but with city sprawl, this has decreased over time. Beyond the natural beauty of the area, tourists will fall in love with the well-preserved colonial architecture. Don’t miss Casa Chata in the Centro Historico—this building is a favorite of many travelers. If you’re looking for more history outside of the main Centro Historico in Mexico City, the small town of Tlalpan is a great place to escape the crowds without sacrificing access to historic attractions.
