When to go to Mexico City

Planning when to go to Mexico City is one of the most important parts of booking your trip, but the lack of extreme temperatures make it a pleasant place at almost any time. The seasons are generally mild, and this huge metropolitan destination draws crowds all year long, due in part to its pleasant climate and in part to its status as an economic and cultural hub. If you plan to travel to Mexico City, there are several factors to consider as to when to go, such as what events you may like to see, whether you want to avoid the crowds, and whether you plan to travel elsewhere in Mexico.

Mexico City seasons do vary, so when you’re planning your trip, you may want to avoid the rainy season from June to September. The torrential rains make it difficult to enjoy sightseeing on foot in the city, and walking is one of the best ways to travel especially around the Historic Center. In terms of Mexico City seasons, May is the hottest month, with the spring months from February to May being quite dry and warm. Keep in mind that if you are concerned about pollution, which is unfortunately a factor in the city, it may affect you the most severely during these warm spring months. During the winter, from late November to January, there is also a greenhouse effect, and you may find the low-lying smog troublesome if you are sensitive to pollution. The Mexico City government issues smog warnings when pollution levels are high, and on those days you should avoid strenuous outdoor activities. The winter in Mexico City is mild, with temperatures in the 70s Fahrenheit (20s Celsius), though nighttime temperatures can plummet towards freezing.

During the college spring break in the US and in Canada, many tourists flock to Mexico to take advantage of the warmer weather. Although most head to beach destinations such as Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico City can also be an interesting destination for those more interested in history, art, and urban culture. Spring break is one of the busiest Mexico City seasons, and tourists who travel to Mexico City can take advantage of many discounted or cheap package deals for airfare and hotels. Keep in mind that when planning when to go to Mexico City, any holiday will mean that the hotels and streets will be crowded.

During the fall, visitors who travel to Mexico City will be able to catch some of the most important national holidays and festivals, as well as take advantage of drier and cooler weather after the rainy summer months. Independence Day takes place in September, and the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is at the beginning of November. Although the city will be crowded during these important holidays, you will get the opportunity to witness huge parades, extensive decorations, and celebrating in Mexico City at its best.

When deciding when to go to Mexico City, consider religious holidays such as Holy Week (the week of Easter) and the Christmas holidays. Many Mexicans will be traveling back to the city to spend these holidays with their families, so transportation networks will likely be backlogged and busy. Nevertheless, visiting Mexico City during these times allows you to glimpse many religious sites at their best, as they are often decorated and full of worshippers.
