With so many exceptional Mexico vacation spots, you’ll have no trouble when it comes to customizing your dream vacation in the country. Mexico is predominantly known for two types of vacation spots: the historical sites and Mayan ruins, and the beautiful beach destinations located along its Caribbean and Pacific coasts. Many travelers reach Mexico via flights from the US, but if you like to combine your transportation into your vacation, then the many cruises to Mexico are great options as well.

If you’re planning a beach trip, the top Mexico vacation destinations include Acapulco, Los Cabos, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen. All of these options are beautiful and known for their different specific attractions. The destinations along the Caribbean, including Cancun and Cozumel, offer easy access to the ruins at Tulum, while the Pacific coast is known for calmer waters (they don’t get hurricanes) and great fishing. For adventurers traveling by RV and interested in a desert environment versus beaches, the Baja peninsula offers miles of scenic open highway with numerous camping locations along the way.

Other great Mexico vacation spots for beach lovers include Puerto Escondido, known for its excellent surfing conditions, at Playa Zicatela. In Puerto Vallarta, the best beaches are Playa Los Muertos and Banderas Bay, known for their miles of sugar-white sand, blue-green water, and coral reefs for those who enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving. Playa Norte in Isla Mujeres is another beach location providing excellent offshore snorkeling and reef diving. From the city, you can take a boat to the Isla Contoy National Wildlife Reserve for an afternoon of wildlife observation and a stroll on the reserves secluded beach.

Playa del Carmen is a favorite of the Mexico vacation spots for those who want to enjoy comforts of a quality hotel, refresh and relax in the cool waters of the Caribbean, and walk to local restaurants and shopping without dealing with excessive crowds. Playa del Carmen provides a laid back and low-key atmosphere but is close enough to Cancun and Cozumel to provide extra excitement from the two resort cities. A short distance from downtown La Paz, the beaches are beautiful and the waters are popular for diving and sea kayaking.

Chichen Itza, located in the Yucatan Peninsula, is a massive archaeological site filled with Mayan ruins and home to pyramids, temples, and other fascinating places to explore. El Castillo, the square pyramid, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Mexican history, and the El Caracol observatory is a historical temple thought to have tracked astronomy, particularly the path of Venus as it crossed the sky. There are dozens of options for Chichen Itza tours, and many travelers choose to combine a beach vacation in Mexico with trips of the ruins as well.

Once you have decided where you will be going and how you will be arriving, a great way to save money on Mexican vacations is by looking for package deals. All inclusive vacation packages to Mexico are particularly popular for the beach destinations. These cover room and board, activities, pool and spa access, and in some cases transportation as well. Most sizable resorts have vacation packages of some sort, though not all are all inclusive. A few of the best known resorts for all inclusive vacation packages to Mexico are the Barcelo Maya Palace and the Excellence Riviera Cancun. An all inclusive vacation is typically a money-saving way to travel, and though it may not always be the absolute cheapest option, it’s by far the most convenient and relaxing.
