Playa del Carmen Beach
The Playa del Carmen beaches are largely responsible for transforming a former fishing village into a major vacation destination. When passenger ferry service was first offered to nearby Cozumel, tourists started to take notice of Playa del Carmen and its beach vacation potential. Not only were the beaches as beautiful as those could be found north in Cancun, but they were also less populated, which was music to the ears of many. Since then, Playa del Carmen has grown significantly and more and more travelers are taking notice of its world-class strips of sand.
Naming the best Playa del Carmen beach is difficult, as they are all spectacular. These are beaches that Caribbean dreams are made of. Clear turquoise waters meet white sands, and more often than not, palms sway with the ocean breezes. In general, the surf is mild at the Playa del Carmen beaches, and this bodes well for such activities as swimming and snorkeling. Depending on which beach you visit, sailing is also an activity option, and you might even find a dive shop onsite. Whatever your taste and preference, there is a beach in Playa del Carmen that is sure to please, and chances are good that you will be tempted to visit more than one.
For some, the best Playa del Carmen beach is one that has a lively atmosphere. Two of the livelier beaches around are Mamitas Beach and Tukan Beach. Both are home to beach clubs that offer watersports equipment rentals, and you can also rent lounge chairs and umbrellas. Restaurants and bars figure among the beach club facilities, and on most days music fills the air. Thanks to their fun atmospheres, these beaches are usually quite crowded. Many Playa del Carmen hotels offers proximity to both of these in-town beaches, so staying close by is an option.
While some of the Playa del Carmen beaches are busy and lively, others are more tranquil and cater to those who are looking for a more relaxed experience. Shangri La Beach is one such beach. Found on the northern side of town, this beach is known for its laid-back appeal. Popular activities include sunning, swimming, and snorkeling, and you can always hope to secure a seaside hammock and swing yourself back and forth while you indulge in the gentle sounds of the surf and the fresh ocean air. The inviting Mahekal Beach Resort enjoys a Shangri La Beach location, and it can be a great place to stay for many different reasons. Its beachfront cabanas are reason enough to give it a look.
On the southern side of Playa del Carmen, you will find the gated community of Playacar. This is where the majority of the Playa del Carmen all inclusive resorts can be found, and these resorts provide wonderful beach access. Guests can wander down to the sand and indulge in things like food and beverage service while they relax, and there are plenty of things to do nearby as well. Maybe you'll try some sea kayaking or do a little body boarding. Playa del Carmen condos and villas that will have you within easy reach of the sand are also found in upscale Playacar, so you might go that route when trying to find your perfect beach base.
It should be noted that Playa del Carmen has a very European influence. In fact, it feels more European than Mexican when it comes down to it. As a result, topless sunbathing has become something that, while illegal, is tolerated. You will also find some beaches off the beaten path that nudists frequent. There is quite a lot of controversy over the matter, as the locals are a conservative and traditional kind of people on the whole. Regardless of your views on the matter, it is something that all visitors should be made aware of.
