Playa del Carmen flights are available in good number throughout the year, though you won't exactly land in Playa del Carmen proper if you take one. This increasingly popular Mexico vacation destination only has a small airport, and it doesn't offer a lot in the way of service for tourists. Instead, most Playa del Carmen visitors arrive at the airport in Cancun and then rely on ground transportation to cover the rest of the distance. It is an easy transfer to handle, especially since the transportation options have significantly increased in recent years.
It takes about 45 minutes to get from the Cancun International Airport to Playa del Carmen, so air travelers who choose this option don't have to spend a ton of time in transit. Some of the all inclusive resorts and other Playa hotels offer airport transfer service for their guests, sometimes even for free.
Other ground transportation options for air travelers who are trying to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen are renting a car, taking a taxi, hopping in a colectivo, and going by bus. Colectivos are essentially airport shuttle vans that can accommodate around ten people or so. When the van is full, the trip to Playa begins, and you may have to visit a few other hotels before you get to your own lodging establishment. As for the bus, you can buy a ticket just before you leave the terminal. The buses depart from an area found outside of the airport's main arrival hall.
Flying to Cancun isn't the only option when trying to get to the Playa del Carmen area. It is also possible to fly to the island of Cozumel and then take one of the ferries. Taxis offer to take travelers to the ferry dock on Cozumel Island, and the ferries to Playa can be picked up on an hourly basis at most times of the day. The ferry ride takes about half an hour. Once you arrive at the Playa ferry dock, you will likely find people to help you with your luggage should you be interested. These luggage handlers most often help travelers get their bags from the dock to a nearby hotel or taxi stand.
The Playa del Carmen Airport is too small to serve the needs of tourists on a grand scale. As such, focusing exclusively on Cancun and Cozumel is the common action when trying to find Playa del Carmen flights. The peak travel season lasts from mid-December to Easter, and this is when flights to the area are at their highest in terms of rates. It can also be harder to secure cheap airfare to Playa del Carmen in August, as this month typically sees a jump in tourist numbers. Hotel and vacation rental rates go down outside of the peak periods, as is true of airfare rates, so you might avoid these periods if you are really trying to save some money on your Playa del Carmen escape.
Another thing that is worth considering if you are trying to secure cheap airfare to Playa del Carmen are vacation packages. These traveler-friendly offers tend to combine various aspects of a vacation, and discounts on everything that is included are common. Other things that can be included are airport transfers, accommodations, and fun Playa del Carmen tours. There are lots of possibilities when it comes to Playa vacations, so getting creative is encouraged when putting your plans together.
