Puerto Vallarta Airport
Puerto Vallarta Airport (IATA code PVR) services the needs of the masses of tourists who descend upon this popular resort destination every year. Because of the marked increase of tourist travel to Puerto Vallarta over the past decades, PVR has expanded its facilities, added features, and now handles well over 3 million passengers annually. The facilities and services are somewhat restricted based simply on the small size of the airport in Puerto Vallarta, but you will be able to find everything you need from currency exchange and international phones to a duty-free store and a gift shop.
The Puerto Vallarta International Airport serves destinations in the U.S. including Chicago, Dallas, New York, and Los Angeles, and other major international airports outside of North America. Within Mexico, airlines operate to and from Mexico City, Guadalajara, Leon, and San Jose del Cabo. The Puerto Vallarta Airport also serves several charter services and is able to transfer passengers on shorter flights to destinations within Mexico through these carriers.

On the main level of PVR, you will find the usual services including a post office, ATM, currency exchange kiosks, magazine vendors, and a bank. If you are not traveling with an international cell phone or have not already otherwise made prepaid arrangement, you have the option of using one of the telephones located on the main floor at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport. This is not a highly recommended practice, however, as the rates can be ridiculously high. You will be much better served by using one of the Telmex credit card phones. For these, you’ll have to purchase a three, five, or ten dollar phone card but will save tremendously. You should not need to use one of these phones if you have done your planning in advance and have arranged for your resort or hotel to pick you up. All of the resorts in Puerto Vallarta offer airport shuttle service and just outside of PVR a bus is likely to be running nearly constantly to and from your resort of choice.
The main level of the Puerto Vallarta Airport is also where you check in and where international and domestic flights are received. The second level of the airport is where you will find a restaurant and lounge as well as the duty-free shop. This large waiting area is ideal for those passengers who have to spend the better part of the day waiting for their connecting flight or departure. Since it is a small facility, you may be asked to allow others to sit down if your flight is not one that is leaving relatively soon, but this rarely happens and the staff at the airport is actually very helpful and kind. On the second level, you can also have drinks at a small lounge as you prepare for your trip. The best part of the Puerto Vallarta International Airport is arriving there because it means you are just beginning your vacation and likely soon on your way to an array of excellent beaches and resorts.
