The Santa Barbara Airport, also commonly referred to as the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport, is a public airport that welcomes more than 700,000 passengers a year. Found approximately seven miles west of downtown Santa Barbara, it was built in the early 1940s and recently underwent a major makeover. This makeover included the opening of a brand new $63 million terminal in 2011. The Santa Barbara Airport address is 601 Firestone Road. That puts it next to the University of California Santa Barbara and the city of Goleta. Anyone who is planning a Santa Barbara vacation can always fly to LAX and then drive to Santa Barbara, but it’s arguably much more agreeable to fly directly to Santa Barbara instead. If nothing else, it saves you what will likely be a two or three-hour drive from LAX to Santa Barbara.
Santa Barbara Airlines
Five major airlines offer service to and from the Santa Barbara Airport. These airlines are United Airlines, American Airlines, US Airways, Alaska Airlines, and Frontier Airlines. United Airlines offers routes to and from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Denver. American Airlines has routes to and from Los Angeles only, while US Airways focuses exclusively on flights to and from Phoenix. For those travelers who are trying to get from Seattle to Santa Barbara, or vice-versa, Alaska Airlines can accommodate. As for Frontier Airlines, it flies to and from Denver.
Santa Barbara Airport Car Rental
Travelers who need to rent a car after arriving at the Santa Barbara Airport should have little issue. No less than six major car rental companies have a presence at the airport. These companies include Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Avis, and Alamo. Another major car rental company, Thrifty, doesn’t operate onsite, though it can also be considered. Those who are interested in the other Santa Barbara Airport ground transportation options can take a taxi, an MTD bus, or rely on both commercial and courtesy shuttles. A public bus stop can be found across from the terminal on Moffett Road.
Santa Barbara Airport Shuttle
While a car can come in handy during a Santa Barbara vacation, it isn’t necessary. Public transportation is available in relatively good supply, as is airport shuttle service. Among the companies of choice for commercial shuttle transportation is Roadrunner Shuttle & Limousine Service. It has been in business since 1991 and offers transportation services around the clock at several regional airports. As the name of Roadrunner Shuttle & Limousine Service implies, the company has a fleet of both shuttle vans and limos. Customers can also travel in a stretch SUV, a motorcoach, or an executive towncar or SUV. For those who are more interested in courtesy airport shuttle service, some of the Santa Barbara hotels are known to offer said service. This can be a very convenient amenity, so it never hurts to check when booking a room at the area hotel of your choice.
Santa Barbara Hotels Airport
Santa Barbara Hotels Airport
Since the Santa Barbara Airport is so close to downtown Santa Barbara, virtually all of the Santa Barbara hotels in the general downtown area could be considered as airport hotels. That being said, some hotels are closer to the airport than others. Examples of good lodging establishments that are especially close to the Santa Barbara Airport include the Holiday Inn Santa Barbara-Goleta, the Best Western Inn PLUS South Coast Inn (pictured), and the Hampton Inn Santa Barbara/Goleta. Pacifica Suites is also worth considering should the budget allow. For travelers who prefer cheaper Santa Barbara airport hotels, both the Motel 6 Santa Barbara Goleta and the Super 8 Santa Barbara/Goleta are very close by. Should all of these lodging establishments be fully booked, both the Ramada Limited Santa Barbara and the Extended Stay America Hotel Santa Barbara are also within close proximity of the airport and can make for good alternatives.
