Cave of the Winds

Cave of the Winds is the name of a cave complex that can be found in Colorado. You can more specifically find it on US Highway 24 to the near west of Colorado Springs. Also located in the general area are Pikes Peak and the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. Tours of the cave complex are offered on a daily basis, and they are quite popular among tourists. It isn’t all about the caves, however. The Cave of the Winds has other attractions, including a visitor center, a gift shop, a spectacular Williams Canyon overlook, a three-mile canyon hiking trail, a manmade maze of sorts that sits on the rim of Williams Canyon, and a zip line.

The Cave of the Winds complex was discovered in 1881 and has been a popular Colorado attraction for more than a century. It is actually one of the most renowned show caves in the entire United States, and since it is situated at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, it is also one of the highest. Visitors who wish to take a tour can choose from two main options. There are the Discovery Tours and the Lantern Tours. The Discovery Tours are more popular, partly because of the fact that they are easier. They last about 45 minutes, and knowledgeable guides are on hand to provide information and answer any questions. On the Lantern Tours, the going is more rugged. Visitors travel deep into the Manitou Grand Caverns with only hand-held lanterns to light the way. The Lantern Tours last about 1.5 hours.

Tickets for Cave of the Winds tours can be purchased individually. Visitors can also interest themselves in the special package deals, which combine cave tours with other activities. There are even special birthday party packages. General discounts are available for those who qualify, so it can be a good idea to inquire about them. The Cave of the Winds is open every day but Christmas, with the general summer hours being 9 am to 9 pm, and the general winter hours being 10 am to 5 pm. Parking is free, and a snack bar is available from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
