Compo Beach and Marina, found just 50 miles north of New
York City, is a 29-acre retreat in the community of Westport. Located on
one of the tips of land that stretches out far into Long Island Sound, known
as the Connecticut Gold Coast, this natural setting is an ideal place to spend
time enjoying a day at the beach.
Like the other beaches that front Long Island Sound, such as Silver Sands State Park, Penfield Beach, and Ocean Beach Park, this Westport Beach offers a place to relax, enjoy outdoor recreation, watch the waves roll in, and admire the scenery.
Compo Beach features a wide stretch of sand, where people come to swim, stroll, and soak in the sun. The salty, cool water and rolling waves make swimming fun and easy for people of all abilities. Back on shore, there's plenty of room to stretch out, curl up with a good book, and scan the expanse of Long Island Sound that seems to go on forever.
Lifeguards are on duty at the beach in Westport Connecticut from Memorial Day to the traditional end of summer, Labor Day. Bathhouses with showers and locker facilities are provided for visitor comfort. Other amenities include the South Beach Picnic Area, complete with barbecue grills. A concession stand is available for those who left the picnic basket at home, or want a quick snack while they're visiting Compo Beach.
Compo Beach and Marina also is a popular place for saltwater fishing. Whether they're fishing from the pier or from the deck of a boat, anglers will find a wide variety of species on the end of their lines. Many report good catches of striped bass. Visitors going for a walk on the beach also can go shellfishing to gather some clams, oysters, or mussels for a fresh seafood meal.
While most of the Connecticut beaches are computer-free zones, this isn't the case here. The community wireless Internet service extends to beach in Westport Connecticut. Transmitters are located all around Compo Beach and the marina, so it's easy to get online, all for free.
Along with swimming, Compo Beach is a popular place for recreation, with a skate park, softball field, sand volleyball courts, and lighted basketball courts. A large playground area is favored by families.
As the name suggests, Compo Beach and Marina is also a popular place for boating. A boat launch ramp makes it easy for visitors to bring in their smaller boats and get started on their time aboard the water. The marina, which has been named the Ned Dimes Marina in honor a local businessman and boating enthusiast, provides a variety of services to keep boats in ship shape.
Compo Beach is open nearly all day—from 4 a.m. to midnight, and the playground is accessible from sunrise to sunset. Daily entry fees are collected at this beach in Westport Connecticut, and parking fees are required between May 1 and September 30. Parking emblems can be purchased through the city for frequent visitors. An additional fee is needed to use the boat launch.
