Delaware Fishing

Fishing in Delaware is a joy, as the state’s entire eastern edge borders water of some kind. Inland, you’ll find a nice array of lakes and streams, and Delaware river fishing can be just as rewarding as heading out to sea. Delaware fishing excursions can involve finding a pier or beach to do some shore fishing, arranging a charter expedition on the high seas, or bellying up to a lake at one of the inland state parks. Delaware bass fishing is among the top Delaware fishing pursuits, and many would argue that the Delaware state park beaches offer the best places to cast your line for a number of fish. Anglers of all skill levels will enjoy adding Delaware fishing trips to their Delaware vacation itineraries. Whether you are solo, hanging out with friends, or enjoying a company outing, fishing in Delaware can be both a relaxing and exciting endeavor all at once.

Delaware borders the Atlantic Ocean on its southeastern edge, and at the beach resort town of Lewes, it becomes the Delaware Bay. The Delaware Bay separates Delaware from southern New Jersey, and as you get to the northern portion of it, it becomes the Delaware River. Should you be based in northern Delaware, perhaps in Wilmington, you can enjoy Delaware River Fishing, which is really a treat. Boaters can get out on the river and see what the river offers up, and it’s an excellent destination for some fly fishing. Maybe you are in it for something simple and just want to fish from the river’s shoreline. You can do that too. Fishing expeditions on the Delaware River can be enjoyed in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and some of the fish species you can hope to catch while Delaware River fishing are trout, sunfish, and carp. The Delaware River is also a good place to try your hand at Delaware bass fishing, as are a variety of inland ponds and lakes. In central Kent County, for instance, there are ponds that you can fish at, and at the Delaware State Parks, you’re bound to find some welcome fishing spots. Just remember that to fish most of Delaware’s waters, you’ll need to get a fishing license first. You can do this in Dover at the Division of Fish and Wildlife, or access one of the many license agents that work at sporting goods stores around the state.

Delaware bass fishing can also be enjoyed in tidal waters, and the recreational fishing season for many of the state’s fish species runs year round. While Delaware River fishing and Delaware State Park fishing is certainly enjoyable, you might compliment the experience with a fishing trip on the Delaware coast. One of the best Delaware fishing charter towns is Lewes, which is also the state’s oldest beach resort town. There are many other great coastal spots in Sussex County where you can enjoy fishing in Delaware. The Lewes charter fishing boats are mostly found docked at the Lewes Harbor, and the local guides here sure know where to take you. Hopefully, you can learn firsthand that Delaware bass fishing is not only found inland. The sea bass here can get pretty big, and you can also enjoy sportfishing expeditions where blue marlin, dolphin fish, and even shark are among the possible catches of the day. The best time to enjoy Delaware saltwater fishing is between the months of May and December, and what you catch is often dependent on the season. The Lewes fishing charter companies offer all kinds of trip options. You can even head out overnight, and sometimes you’ll find yourself 100 miles offshore.

Shore fishing at the Delaware beaches is one of the most enjoyable ways to enjoy fishing in Delaware. The Delaware Seashore State Park, which is found north of Bethany Beach and south of Dewey Beach features the Indian River Inlet. The swift currents here might require a sufficient fishing rod, as can the ocean surf of southern Delaware. At Fenwick Island, you can go surf fishing all day, which is also true of other destinations here as well. The wonderful Cape Henlopen State Park is just one of the places where you can enjoy fishing in Delaware from a fishing pier. The hotels, resorts and bed and breakfasts found at the Delaware beach resort towns can usually help you arrange the kind of fishing experience that best suits you, so don’t be hesitant to inquire. Chances are, if they don’t have immediate recommendations, they can at least point you in the right direction. Wherever you choose to go fishing in Delaware, you’re bound to have nothing but a good time.
