Found just 15-20 miles south of Delaware's capital city of Dover, the Harrington Raceway and Casino is where you can head to enjoy some exciting gaming action. The region's finest horses are known to race on the recently renovated track here, and you can catch mostly harness races, with some thoroughbred events scheduled for the season as well. During the off season, and whenever live races aren't taking place, you can wager on simulcast events here. The Harrington Raceway has positioned itself among the top tracks in the country, offering both horsemen and gaming guests an enjoyable experience. The Delaware history and the Delaware beaches are certainly responsible for bringing a bunch of visitors into the state, and attractions such as the Harrington Raceway and Casino only serve to make Delaware vacations that much more enjoyable and diverse. The Harrington Raceway and Casino has not only seen renovations to its race track, but also to the casino as well. There is no casino hotel here like you will find at Dover Downs, but there are hotels close by, and the Dover hotels have you close enough to enjoy as many visits as you please.
Delaware horse racing features not only regional horses, but national entries as well. The Harrington Raceway has enjoyed more than 60 years of harness racing, and the renovations to the track that were made in 2003 helped to make it more safe, not to mention faster. Races are held here mostly between the months of April and August, with daily live racing offered Sundays-Thursdays. When live racing is going on, the Harrington Raceway Clubhouse is open, and visitors can enjoy a nice dining experience here. In 1996, the various Delaware race tracks were awarded the rights to provide video lottery machines, and as such, the Harrington Casino was added to the complex here. The casino has over 2,000 full service gaming machines available, and the recent $40 million expansion has improved things considerably. A percentage of the earnings from these machines goes towards the racing purses. On a typical nightly race, it's not uncommon for the racetrack to award purses that can total $150,000. It is this purse money that is largely responsible for the track's industry status.
The significant prize money that is awarded to horsemen here has allowed many of them to invest in their private stables. The result is usually faster race horses. All Delaware owned and bred horses receive additional bonuses, which helps keep the local industry booming. Should you be visiting the Harrington Raceway and Casino primarily for the casino, you'll find thousands of slot machines and a Simulcasting Parlor room that can seat up to 350 people. If dining at the racetrack Clubhouse doesn't suit you, you'll find an array of restaurants to choose from at the casino, including both casual and fine dining affairs. New cashier's windows and a new Players Club are just some of the highlights from the recent renovations, and all machines are coinless. The BONZ Lounge is a nice place to catch weekend entertainment, and save for Sundays, you can enjoy gaming around the clock at the casino. On Sundays, the casino closes between the hours of 6 a.m. and Noon. Also, the casino is closed on Christmas Day and on Easter. The hotels found near this renowned Delaware race track are mostly of the chain and motel variety, with a Holiday Inn Express and an AmericInn Lodge and Suites motel as two of the primary choices.
