Disney World Epcot Center is the second of the Walt Disney World theme parks built, the first being the Magic Kingdom. The original name of Disney Epcot Center was an acronym for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. In fact, Walt Disney intended Epcot to be an experimental urban residence community that constantly introduced and tested new technological innovations. However, Disney's dream was not to be realized as he passed away before the Magic Kingdom was completed.
Since Disney's passing, his Imagineers had trouble planning exactly what Disney World Epcot Center would become. Some thought it should reflect the latest technological advancements as Walt himself would have wanted. Others thought that it should reflect world cultures. Everyone agreed that they would not attempt building Disney's futuristic "community of tomorrow" city. Finally, Disney Imagineers agreed to merge their plans and create two worlds within one: Future World, which encompasses cutting-edge technology, and World Showcase, which highlights the distinctive customs and cultures of the world. Today, the giant golf ball-like Spaceship Earth is the widely recognized embodiment of Disney Epcot Center that was meant to signify futuristic technology.
Even now, Disney Epcot Center has two camps of thought: One group thinks the park, which opened in 1982, is outdated and should incorporate today's more modern equipment. Others enjoy the nostalgia of the eighties and want Disney Epcot Center to remain as a reminder for our past thinking of what the future may hold. With the recent fascination with eighties fashion and pop culture, it seems that Disney World Epcot Center is taking advantage of the latter school of thought by showcasing performance troupes featuring eighties New Wave hits.
Epcot Center Orlando is not known for its big thrill rides, as most of the other area theme parks. Disney World Epcot Center has more of a reputation for learning and discovery. Many of the Future World attractions are educational in nature, focusing on science and technology.
World Showcase attractions include authentic reproductions of cultural architecture, food, art, and performances. For variety, entertainment, and atmosphere, it is hard to beat Epcot Center food and cuisine. Whether you enjoy character dining, gourmet food, fast food, or a unique dining experience, you cannot go wrong planning to sample from the many Epcot Center food establishments and eateries.
Even if some attractions are more educational than others, that doesn't mean that they fail to impress! Visitors to Reflections of China will feel like they actually are touring the "Land of Many Faces." Thrill seekers will enjoy the Epcot Center Orlando Test Track, where guests participate as crash test dummies. The latest addition is Soarin', a recent import from Disney's California Adventure theme park. Disney World Epcot Center also features some of the world's best live shows. End the day with a bang by watching the pyrotechnics of IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth and witness the wonders of the seven continents shown to glorious effect over the lagoon.
