At Marathon Florida, fishing is in, and fisherman often
make room in their days for some exciting tarpon fishing.
Dubbed the "silver king", tarpon have incredible
endurance, can make strong runs on your line, and will
dazzle you with lofty leaps out of the water. Novice
anglers and experienced fisherman can catch this big fish
just by tossing their lines off either the Seven Mile
Bridge, or the Bahia Honda bridge. Stick to the
east and west ends of the Seven Mile Bridge, or wet your
line at Long Key Bridge, and enjoy the fish that frequent
these artificial reefs. Of course, when you think
of fishing in Florida, you likely
conjure up the images associated with offshore sportfishing.

At Marathon Key, offshore fishing is a treat. Charter ships and party boats offer the best way to get out and troll for Gulfstream sailfish, dolphin fish, and wahoo. At the Marathon West Hump, fisherman get a unique chance to fish an underwater platform that rises from 1,100 feet below the surface to a peak of 480 feet. Many interesting gamefish feed here, and the usual catch often includes amberjack, blue and white marlin, Mako shark and blackfin tuna. Try lightcasting the Marathon Florida boneflats for bonefish, permit and tarpon, head out reef fishing, or enjoy bay fishing Gulfside at Marathon Key, where the bay is deeper and more open than that of surrounding keys. Bay fishing is great for families, and when it's too rough for offshore or reef fishing, you'll find it's still calm and comfortable on the bay.

Ecotourists will find Florida Key Marathon kayaking
gives them a great opportunity to visit coral patches,
where the shallow water also offers excellent snorkeling
and some top Florida
scuba diving. The coral patches attract sea
life in all forms, with tiny tropical fish and sea turtles
among the marine life you will see. Experienced
kayakers with a GPS receiver can locate these coral patches
quite easily, and the less experienced can enjoy them
as well with a guide. Ecotourists looking to hike
their cares away can head to Crane Point Hammock, which
is a 64-acre paradise not far from the center of town.
A hammock is a raised patch of land with just enough soil
to sustain a variety of plant life, and the tropical hardwood
trees at Crane Point are among the unique foliage at Marathon
Key. On Crane Point, witness white crowned pigeons,
raccoons, ibis, herons, dragonflies and butterflies along
the two miles of walking trails.
