The Key West International Airport occupies the southeastern corner of Key West Island. That puts it approximately 180 miles southwest of Miami and makes it the southernmost airport in the continental United States. The first paved runway was laid here in 1956, and to this day the Key West Airport is a single runway facility. Major renovations that started in 2006 more than doubled the airport’s size, with a new terminal figuring among the main additions. This remains a very small airport, however, and it lacks an overabundance of restaurants and other amenities. The airport does have some gift shops and a snack counter, however. And being that this is Key West, it only seems appropriate that there is also an airport bar.
Key West Airport Airlines
Key West Airport Airlines
A number of major air carriers offer regular service to the Key West Airport, including US Airways, Delta and American Eagle Airlines. The bulk of the flights that are offered by such airlines are routed through Miami International Airport. Examples of smaller airlines that also schedule regular service to the Key West Airport include Cape Air and Silver Airways. As is true of private charters, these smaller airlines offer direct flights from many of Florida’s other cities, as well as destinations out of the Bahamas and beyond. Alas, no discussion about Key West flights would be complete without mentioning the Key West to Havana flights. Thanks to a collaboration between Air Marbrisa and Mambi International Group, flights from the Key West International Airport to the José Martí International Airport now take off on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays every week. Such service had been unavailable for more than 50 years.

Key West isn’t exactly the best island for driving, though you can rent a car if you want to. In Old Town Key West in particular, there is limited parking and the traffic on the narrow streets is often congested. As such, many people opt to take advantage of the regional shuttle services when trying to get from the airport to their next intended destinations. Several operations offer such services and can provide transfers from the airport to destinations around the Keys. There are also services for shuttle transfers to and from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Key West visitors who are staying at a hotel are encouraged to see if their lodging establishment of choice offers shuttle service of its own. Other options for getting around Key West when it’s too far to walk and you don’t have a car include taking taxis or renting a bike or moped.

To get to the Key West International Airport by car, hop on State Highway A1A, which runs along the outer edge of the airport and encircles Key West Island’s eastern half.
