Smathers Beach

Smathers Beach is a favorite for two kinds of people—those who want to lounge in sun with a book as well as those like to who seek out thrills. One of the few beaches on Key West, this strip of sand and surf is a fine place to soak up the sun or try water sports or beachcombing.

The largest of the four beaches located within the city proper, Smathers Beach Key West hugs the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. This half-mile stretch of beach not far from the airport is a popular stop during spring break, but Smathers Beach is beautiful any day of the year. In fact, some 150,000 annual visitors enjoy the beach, which is warm and welcoming in all seasons.

Beachcombers don’t have to carry everything they need with them because they can rent lounge chairs, beach towels, and equipment for sailing, rafting, and water-skiing. Vendors set up carts all along Smathers Beach Key West, selling ice cream, pizza, cool drinks, and other tropical favorites. The palm trees, blowing in a breeze, also provide a taste of the tropics and some much-needed shade from the warm midday sun.

Beachgoers have an array of choices for things to do at Smathers Beach Florida. Swimming is a perennial favorite at Smathers Beach Key West, as are the volleyball courts, jet skis, and boat ramp. A picnic area and restroom facilities are available for visitor comfort.

There’s no entry fee to visit Smathers Beach Florida. Travelers who want to spend more time at beach on a Key West vacation can check out the other nearby beaches including South Beach, Higgs Beach, and Best Beach. Fort Zachary Taylor features beaches along the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as Civil War-era fort that’s fascinating to explore.
