Stock Island

Stock Island is an up and coming place to visit when making your way around the Florida Keys. Separated from the island of Key West by just a couple hundred feet of water, this island boasts marinas for boaters to take advantage of, one of which has a delightful marina village. Other reasons to drop in on Stock Island include the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden and the Key West Golf Club. The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is the only frost-free tropical moist garden in the continental United States and is a great place to get in touch with nature. The Key West Golf Club offers 18 beautiful holes and gets plenty of rave reviews for its overall appeal. It should be noted that the northern half of Stock Island falls within the Key West city limits. The southern half is a census designated place and unincorporated community that is aptly known as Stock Island.

Stock Island Hotels

Stock Island hotels are hard to come by. In fact, there are no hotels at all on the island, though this is likely to change in the near future as the island is being targeted for increased tourism. Worry not if you want to stay close to the island and its attractions, however, as there are plenty of hotels in Key West that will put you just a short distance away. Just across the water from Stock Island on Key West’s eastern edge, you will find a number of good lodging bets that are also very close to the Key West International Airport. Among the hotels in this immediate area are the Hyatt Beach House Resort and the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel (pictured). On Stock Island itself, there are vacation rentals to select from, and boaters who are docked at the marinas have amenities to use as they see fit. Rounding out the accommodation options on Stock Island is Boyd’s Key West Campground. Whether you have a tent, a camper or an RV, Boyd’s Campground can accommodate you. Well, provided that it isn’t fully booked already.

The Stock Island Marina is the largest deep water marina in the Florida Keys and can accommodate all kinds of boats, including mega yachts. The marina is part of Marina Village and has a gated community feel. Laundry facilities, a bathhouse with showers, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a dog park, a community garden, and a ship store figure among the various features of the Stock Island Marina and Village. Guests can also make use of the wireless internet access, the electric hookups, the pump outs, and the ship store. In the Marina Village, you’ll find some bars and restaurants. Be sure to check out the events calendar at the Chickee Garden, which often plays host to parties and other fun events.

It is no secret that the Florida Keys aren’t renowned for their beaches. That being said, there are some pretty great beaches to visit in the island chain. While Stock Island lacks any of real repute, neighboring Key West Island is there to save the day. Among the standouts when it comes to the Key West beaches is Smathers Beach. Little more than a mile from the Stock Island city center, Smathers Beach (pictured) is Key West’s largest public beach and is lined with coconut palms, giving it a tropical appeal.
