Things to do in Pensacola

The list of things to do in Pensacola is quite extensive. Add in the great year-round weather, and it only becomes clearer that this Florida panhandle city makes for a fine vacation destination. May through October is when most people decide to visit, but when it comes down to it, there really isn't a bad time to drop on down for some Pensacola fun.

The Pensacola beaches are hailed as being some of the whitest beaches that you will find anywhere in the world. Contrast this with the emerald-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and you have some truly spectacular strips of sand. You'll find both busy and quiet beaches in and around Pensacola, so finding one that fits your preference shouldn't be hard.

Gulf Islands National Seashore

The Gulf Islands National Seashore offers more than 150 miles of pristine beaches, making it a popular playground for Pensacola residents and visitors alike. You can actually find parts of it in both Florida and Mississippi, and there is more for visitors to do than just hang out on beaches. Birdwatching and hiking are just two of the other activity options, and there is camping for visitors who don't want to leave when the sun goes down. Both developed and primitive campsites can be found in both districts.

Fort Pickens

One of the most popular Pensacola attractions, Fort Pickens was completed back in 1834 and was one of several forts built in the area to help protect Pensacola Bay. The history is a rich one, and it includes a tense standoff that took place during the Civil War. You can find Fort Pickens in the Gulf Islands National Seashore portion that is found on Santa Rosa Island, and campsites are close to the site if you wish to take advantage.

Being that Pensacola is a coastal city, the fishing is excellent. Visitors can go deep sea fishing in Pensacola or stick to inland bodies of water, such as those that are found in Big Lagoon State Park. Charter companies are in good supply to help you make the most of your angling experience, and you won't want to pass on the chance to cast your line off one of the area fishing piers, such as the one in Pensacola Beach.

Golf Courses

Florida offers hundreds of golf courses, and most are of considerable quality. In and around Pensacola, you will certainly find several gems, and you might be surprised just how affordable they can be. You don't have to break the bank to enjoy a great golf vacation in Pensacola, and golf packages are out there should you be looking for good deals.

Pensacola Lighthouse

The Pensacola Light, as this lighthouse is known, has overlooked Pensacola Sound since 1858, and there is a museum next door if you want to learn more about it. You can also take a tour of the lighthouse itself, and the views from the top are definitely worth the climb. You can see out over the bay and spot barrier islands and the Gulf of Mexico in the near distance.

Boating is one of the most rewarding things to do in Pensacola. If you don't have your own boat, the local charter and boat rental companies can help you out. While venturing out with a charter company, there is no telling what you might have on the agenda. Perhaps some fishing or general sightseeing. Pensacola diving offers wonderful possibilities, so you might look to add it to the mix, though a fun party cruise might be preferable if you are simply looking to unwind. Of course, you can always pass on the larger boats and head out on the water in a canoe or kayak.

Pensacola has a rich history, and you can learn more about it by visiting a local museum. Some of the Pensacola museums are part of an excellent historical village that can be found right downtown. It's not all about history when it comes to the Pensacola museums, however. There are art museums as well, and time should be made for the renowned National Museum of Naval Aviation if you are looking for culturally-rich things to do.
