Helen Georgia Oktoberfest

Helen Georgia Oktoberfest celebrates the mountain town’s Bavarian heritage. Like the original Oktoberfest’s home of Munich, Helen hosts a harvest festival every September that includes great music, free-flowing beer and plenty of fun for everybody. The festival starts just as the leaves begin the change and continues until the peak show of golds, reds and ambers arrives. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains scenery, alpine architecture, and the Chattahoochee River, Helen is the perfect setting for Oktoberfest.

The three-week festival begins the same time each year. It begins the second Thursday in September and continues until the first Sunday of November.  This means you have plenty of time to get out and enjoy the festival. If you want to go once or want to party multiple times, the long schedule makes it easy to do so. Most of the events are scheduled on the weekend. But even during the week, there’s plenty of things to do. Admission is charged on Friday and Saturday night, but the rest of the time, you only pay for food and drinks.

Just like the festival in Munich, food and drink are the draw to the Helen Georgia Oktoberfest. Most of it is served at the Festhalle, which is as much a gathering place as a restaurant. The festival serves up traditional Bavarian fare, which means plenty of spätzle, roast pork, and sauerbraten. You’ll also have the chance to sample sausages and apple dishes in the traditional Bavarian style, served by ladies wearing dirndls and gentlemen in lederhosen. And of course, there’s plenty of beer for the adults to enjoy at Oktoberfest.

Beyond Festhalle, you’ll have the chance to enjoy arts and crafts demonstrations, kids games and all that Helen has to offer. The highly walkable town has some great shops to visit, and it’s not too cold for rafting the Chattahoochee in September.

Beyond the food and the shopping, the schedule of events includes lots of live music—oompah and polka music of course. Some of the bands make the trip from Germany and Austria just to play in Helen. Other bands are local, playing instruments they carved themselves. Nachoochee Village, a community center and museum hosts a concert series during Oktoberfest, while Helen hosts yodeling contests and polka dance lessons.
