Columbus

Columbus

Located in western Georgia, Columbus Georgia is near the Chattahoochee River and was named after Christopher Columbus.  Because of its proximity to the river, Columbus Georgia has longed served as a production and industrial capital for the state of Georgia.  Travelers who plan to visit Columbus attractions will be in for a range of historic and entertaining attractions.

One of the most popular Columbus attractions is the home of Dr. John S. Pemberton, the inventor of Coca-Cola.  The residence has been opened to the public for tours, and is open throughout the week.  Columbus Georgia is also home to the remains of two original Confederate navy ships, which can also be viewed daily throughout the week.  Columbus attractions also include the Port Columbus National Civil War Naval Museum.  One of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s former homes, known as the “Little White House”, is also located near the city of Columbus.  The Columbus Museum and the Coca-Cola Space Science Center are also popular Columbus attractions.

Columbus Georgia sightseeing is a great way to explore the city, and many travelers plan to tackle Columbus Georgia sightseeing on foot.  A walking tour of Columbus Georgia can center on downtown, and Columbus Georgia sightseeing walking tour maps are available at the Columbus tourism center.  As an alternative to Columbus tours on foot, there are also a number of travel companies that offer Columbus tours by bus.  These guided tours will offer information about the history and most popular attractions in Columbus.

Nightlife in Columbus is also worthy of a Columbus tour.  The Springer Opera House has been offering shows for more than 134 years, and continues to be the most popular place in Columbus to see an Opera show.  The RiverCenter Performing Arts Center is also a great place to go in the evening.  Most nights of the week, travelers can take in a Broadway show or some other kind of theatre show.  The Columbus Civic Center is yet another great place to visit at night.

So, whether you plan to spend your time in Columbus touring the historic downtown area or visiting some of the residences of famous characters from the past, Columbus truly has a lot to see.  Museums, entertainment and the arts abound in Columbus, as do the forts and other structures from the Civil War era.  Whether you are a history buff hoping to explore one of the most important Confederate sites during the Civil War, or simply a traveler hoping to see some of the Old South, Columbus is an excellent choice for any vacation to Georgia.
