Georgia Aquarium

Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium of its kind in the world with more than 8 million gallons of marine and fresh water, inhabited by more than 100,000 animals of 500 different species. The Atlanta Georgia Aquarium is located in Atlanta, Georgia, and draws thousands of visitors each month. Although the Georgia Aquarium has only been open since November of 2005, the Atlanta Georgia Aquarium sold almost 300,000 annual passes in its first year, and continues to enjoy great popularity.

The Georgia Aquarium was designed by an Atlanta-based architecture firm. They designed both the interior and exterior of the Atlanta Georgia Aquarium, keeping in mind the high inflow of people expected to visit this aquarium in Georgia. Attendance to the aquarium in Georgia exceeded even the most optimistic predictions, and the aquarium in Georgia welcomed its millionth visitor after being open to the public for only three months.

Inside the museum, visitors will see a collection of fish and other sea creatures, representing more than 500 species. There are actually somewhere between 100,000 and 120,000 fish and sea creatures housed in the aquarium. This staggering number includes whale sharks, beluga whales, loggerhead sea turtles, sawfish, seahorses, sea stars, anemones, bowmouth guitarfish, cuttlefish and so much more. Some of the species at the aquarium are endangered, and some are just unique. Fish and animals from literally all around the world can be found here.

There are five different galleries which house the fish. Each gallery corresponds to a specific environment, and all of the galleries and designed for optimal viewing capabilities for visitors. The Ocean Voyager exhibit tunnel, for example, is an overhead tunnel, where visitors actually walk beneath the enormous water tank. Fish, seemingly to fly, swim overhead as the entire aquarium is bathed in an eerie, watery light. Although this is only one of the five galleries, all of the galleries are equally impressive, and give tourists a chance to see the fish in ways they may never see them in again.

Georgia Aquarium tickets can be purchased online in advance, or in person at the Georgia Aquarium ticket booth. Because this is by far one of the most popular places to visit in Atlanta, it is a good idea to plan your trip to the Aquarium during the week if at all possible. The museum is incredibly crowded on the weekends, and during the week travelers will have a better chance to see more of the Aquarium with fewer people milling about. Georgia Aquarium tickets can be purchased for a day, or for locals, annual passes are also available. The aquarium is open 7 days a week.
