Things To Do In Savannah

A well-known proverb in Georgia says that in Atlanta the first thing you are asked is your profession, in Charleston it’s your mother’s maiden name, and in Savannah it’s what you want to drink. This is an exceedingly friendly and open place. What’s more, there’s a good selection of things to do in Savannah for the vacationer. Museums, parks, and forts are all top-quality attractions in Savannah, ensuring that everyone should be able to spend a highly enjoyable time here. When considering your travel itinerary, you will find no shortage of activities in Savannah.

Savannah Hostels

While at first it may seem slightly strange to list accommodation among the top things to do in Savannah, those who have stayed in the city’s excellent hotels, B&Bs, and budget motels will testify that Savannah’s eminently hospitable ethos makes a stay in its accommodations truly memorable. After all, Savannah is famous for being the Hostess City, and it would be a shame to miss staying in one of the many sociable hotels while on vacation here.

Antebellum Architecture

Top attractions in Savannah include the prevailing architecture of the city, which is a charming example of picturesque antebellum architecture. Take a walk around the town, and look for the Owen Thomas House and the Victorian Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, if possible. Such walks are likely some of the most enjoyable and interesting free things to do in Savannah that you'll find.

Downtown Savannah

Downtown Savannah is the largest National Historic Landmark District in America. Quaint and full of photo opportunities, the City Market and River Street are found in the area and are standout attractions in Savannah in their own right.

Savannah is built around a series of town squares, which help create the open, amiable atmosphere prevalent around every corner. Wonderful days can be spent moving from square to square, reading a book for an hour or so in each, or simply gazing at the marvelous surrounding architecture.

River Street

While it may be one of the more touristy areas of Savannah, ambling along River Street is nonetheless one of the best things to do in Savannah. A cobbled road, it is home to an array of shops, such as clothes boutiques and souvenir joints. You’ll also find some excellent restaurants here that can lay claim to being some of the best Georgia dining opportunities available.

There is a trio of forts in and around Savannah, and guided or self-designed tours of these are among the best activities in Savannah. Fort Jackson is a brick fort three miles from downtown Savannah, while Fort McAllister is a little farther away. Its grounds are a haven for wildlife, making it a great destination for those wanting to try outdoor activities in Savannah such as watching for wildlife. Fort Pulaski, meanwhile, is on its way to Tybee Island. An imposing square construct protected by a wide moat, it makes for a great day trip from the city.
