Hapuna
Beach is great for swimming, and especially bodysurfing,
but only in the summer when the ocean is calmest. You'll
find A-frame cabins for camping, pavilions, restrooms,
and showers, and even food concessions. Of course, all
this draws the summer crowds. It's one of the best snorkeling
areas on the Kona-Kohala coast.
Bodyboarding (boogie boarding) is as popular as bodysurfing
here. You can rent boards and fins, and beginners can
get pointers on the best spots in the surf.
Hint:
In the winter, you'll find thundering waves and strong
rip tides and currents, and lifeguards are not on duty.
Hint:
In the winter, the water can be dangerous, with thundering
clouds and strong rip tides.
