For
a glimpse of ancient Hawaii, you'll want to head for Pua
Loa Petroglyphs, found near the 15-mile marker on the
Chain of Craters Road. Here, a quick half-mile walk takes
you to a circular boardwalk for viewing thousands of Hawaiian
petroglyphs carved in stone.
This sacred place has an unusual history: Fathers in
ancient Hawaii came here to bury their newborn's umbilical
cord in the tiny holes in the lava. This ensured a long
life for the child.
Warning:
Please don't do any petroglyph rubbings, as this will
destroy them over time. A photo is much better. Also,
you're requested to stay on the boardwalk.
