Lighthouse
fans will love the historic Kilauea Lighthouse, built
in 1913 and manned by the Coast Guard and now under the
jurisdiction of the Fish and Wildlife Services of the
U.S. Department of the Interior.
The lighthouse has the largest "clamshell lens"
in the world and can send a beam 90 miles out to sea.
The lens is no longer used, however, and has been replaced
by a low-maintenance high-intensity light.
The surrounding area is swarming with birds and monk
seals and green turtles can sometimes be seen along the
shore. Dolphins and whales can sometimes be spotted offshore.
