Lihue is the government center and commercial core of Kauai. And, since the city is home to the island’s main airport, it is a popular destination for Hawaii travelers. For tourists, the beaches are a reason to stay and play in Lihue, with Kalapaki Beach and Ninini Beach being two of the area favorites. Attractions at Kalapaki Beach include the Marriott Kauai’s Beach Club and the Hokuala Resort, which boasts a true golfer’s delight – the Nicklaus-designed Ocean Course. Ninini Beach is well known for its lighthouse, which dates back to 1897 and was automated in 1953.

Guests at the Lihue Kauai hotels can mix beach time and golf with any number of other side pursuits. Just north of the city is beautiful Wailua Falls, and it’s only minutes to the fascinating Alekoko Menehune Fishpond, which was built nearly 1,000 years ago and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Perhaps a trip inland to the Kilohana Estate will be in order for some insight into plantation life in days gone by. Back in Lihue proper, the Kauai Museum is a great place to stop, both for the exhibits and the arts and crafts at the gift shop.
