Baldwin Beach is a popular place to spend the day in Maui. Located off the Hana Highway between Paia and Sprecklesville, this North Shore beach is part of the eponymous Baldwin Beach Park and is a favorite among locals in particular. The sand is soft here and extends for some distance, offering plenty of room to find a spot, even if it’s a crowded weekend or holiday. A tip is to come early in the morning if you want to experience Baldwin Beach when it is more quiet. Of course, soaking up the sun and having fun while enjoying an array of activities helps to make afternoon visits tempting, and if you linger long enough, chances are good that you’ll be treated to a lovely sunset before evening settles in.
Baldwin Beach Maui Waves
Baldwin Beach Park is arguably the most popular family beach on Maui’s North Shore. This has something to do with the park’s ample amenities, which include barbecues, picnic tables, a covered pavilion, a baseball diamond, a soccer field, showers to get the sand off, and restrooms. Lifeguards are on duty to watch over the water, which can get rough at times, especially during the winter months when larger swells are more common. For the calmest water conditions, head to the east or west ends of the beach where tranquil pools tend to present much more ideal conditions for swimming and wading. The west end is commonly known as Baby Beach, while the east end is called Baldwin Cove.
At times, the waves get big enough for surfing at Baldwin Beach. Body boarding is also something that visitors like to do when the conditions present themselves. The tendency at Baldwin Beach is for the surf to break along the entire length of the beach, so surfers and body boarders can usually spread out. If you’re not up for surfing or body boarding, you might try kite boarding. The area is a renowned kite boarding destination, as is evidenced by the name of nearby Kite Beach. Of course, you can opt to just kick back on the sand and take it all in at Baldwin Beach. Adding beautiful depth to the scenery are the mountains to the west.
Whatever you have in mind for your visit to Baldwin Beach, there is a semi-paved parking area that you can use if you are driving over. As is true virtually anywhere, it is recommended that visitors lock their cars and keep any valuables out of sight. Several restaurants can be found east of Baldwin Beach Park in Paia if you are looking for nearby places to eat. To the near west is the Kahului Airport. Area hotels are available and include such examples as the Maui Seaside Hotel, the Paia Inn and the Courtyard Maui Kahului Airport.
