The waters of Honolua Bay present a calm atmosphere during the summer, making it an ideal and popular destination for snorkeling and diving. Additionally, the bay is home to a wide variety of fish, coral, and undersea wildlife, as it is part of the Mokuleia Marine Life Conservation District, and snorkelers and divers will find an abundance of interesting sights below the surface of these crystal waters. Snorkeling and diving is also done outside of the summer season; however, because the waters tend to become rough and invariably dangerous, visitors are encouraged to use caution and follow posted rules and warnings before entering the water.

In the winter months, the surfing season is in full swing, and at its peak, when surfers flock for the challenge, the waves are at their mightiest.  A powerful wave rises up out of the sea, creating a large hollow tube and a long ride in the area known as The Cave, one of three sections; the other areas include The Point and Keiki Bowls.  Admirers often congregate on the nearby bluffs for the ideal position to observe the experts on the surf. For amateur and newbie surfers, lessons are available, but all visitors should be aware that the winter waters are quite turbulent and can pose a serious danger to all engaging in water activities.
