Known to locals as Old Fleming Beach, Kapalua Beach Maui is a pristine crescent of soft white sand protected on both sides by lava points jutting out into the ocean that keep the waters in the sheltered bay quite calm well into the afternoon. This is the time of day when there are typically strong offshore currents, and the lava points at Kapalua Beach keep out the more turbulent waters even during the winter. In addition to all things to do at Kapalua Beach, this makes it very popular with families. The calm, shallow waters and plethora of colorful reef fish make for excellent snorkeling and scuba diving, and the long stretch of resort coast provides numerous dining spots to satisfy your hunger.
Kapalua Beach is not a good beach for traditional Maui surfing because of the calm waters, but it is excellent for the kids to body surf and for ocean kayaking. Additional facilities and services include showers, restrooms, and lifeguards. There is also an activities center offering rentals of water-sports gear. Other beaches are accessible on either end of Kapalua Beach, including less-crowded Oneola Beach; Honolua Bay, a Marine Conservation District with stronger waters and no lifeguard; and rugged Mokuleia Bay, site of the Slaughterhouse Beach, where cattle from the Honolua and Makawao ranches were driven to slaughter. These adjacent beaches can be accessed on foot, and there is also a complimentary shuttle service for guests of several of the area resorts.
In 1991, Kapalua Beach Maui was the first beach to appear on the America’s Best Beaches list. It is, in fact, one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. It is located just north of Napili Bay and backed by the many Kapalua hotels and resorts that line the shore here. Also part of the scenic backdrop is a twelve-acre grove of centuries-old palm trees and lovely gardens. Among the luxury resorts on this beach is the Ritz Carlton Kapalua.
If you are staying at the Ritz Carlton, they offer many things to do at Kapalua Beach for children from ages five to eighteen with a supervised Ambassadors of the Environment programs. The young people can be kept occupied with activities that include classes in underwater photography, rainforest hiking, sand sculpting, and creating art from beach debris. The Ritz Carlton is also the location of one of the full-service Maui spas. In addition to the Kapalua hotels, you will also find a large number of vacation rentals available.
Kapalua Beach is also known for its spectacular sunsets, making it a prime location for Maui weddings and other special events. Golfing is also one of the popular things to do at Kapalua Beach, and the Kapalua Golf Resort is directly behind the beach. A total of two championship courses are in the vicinity. They include the Bay Course designed by Arnold Palmer and the Plantation Course where the PGA Tour season opener is held.
Other Kapalua Beach Maui attractions include driving this entire stretch of the north coast. Its scenic beauty rivals that of the Hana Road, and if you have taken advantage of the island’s car rentals, it is a fairly simple drive that can be accomplished in an afternoon excursion. Even the museums and waterfront of Lahaina are only a short drive away.
