Oahu Luau

A traditional Hawaiian luau can be one of the most fun things experience during an evening on Oahu. The tropical, star-filled sky, warm ocean breeze, beautiful backdrop and festive island spirit creates a memorable evening for eager guests. A Hawaiian luau is essentially a party featuring delicious island fare, gracious hospitality, traditional songs and ancient chants. Exciting Hawaiian activities such as the ancestral hula and breathtaking Samoan knife fire dances are also part of the show.

The Oahu luau on Waikiki Beach is showcased on Wednesday evenings along the most famous strip in Honolulu. Guests are greeted with an aromatic flower lei, a customary Hawaiian welcome. Guests at the waikiki Beach Luau also receive a tropical cocktail when they arrive at the oceanfront expanse. This Hawaiian luau show is set on the Diamond Head Lawn offering a majestic setting for the proceeding Hawaiian activities.

Beginning at 6pm, the Oahu luau chefs cook the kalua pig in a traditional imu oven and serve it along with lau lau, mahi mahi, chicken long rice, fried rice, teriyaki steak and baked sweet potatoes. The feast also includes lomi lomi salmon, a variety of fresh salads and pickled cucumber namasu. Guests end the feast with desserts including fresh pineapple from the Dole plantation, coconut, carrot and chiffon cake.

The best Hawaiian luau on the island is considered to be the Paradise Cove Luau. Held on the grounds of a sprawling estate, that once belonged to one of the most prominent Hawaiian families, the backdrop is one of the most beautiful in all of Oahu. The Paradise Cove show is considered the best Hawaiian luau not only for it’s breathtaking backdrop but also because of the breadth of Hawaiian activities guests enjoy with admission. A variety of traditional Hawaiian games are on display such as disc throwing and palm climbing.

Guests can also participate in the Hukilau which is when the fishing nets are pulled out of the ocean to the ceremonious island chants and deep sounds of the conch shell. Twelve acres of immaculate grounds is where local crafts are displayed, including traditional Hawaiian quilts. The all-you-can-eat feast features the most succulent of Hawaiian dishes cooked to perfection. As the sun sets the performance begins and guests are treated to an energetic and fascinating Hawaiian luau show fronting the Pacific.

The Royal Hawaiian, one of the more revered Oahu resorts, also showcases an Oahu luau on Waikiki Beach, called the Royal Luau, featured every Monday and Thursday evening starting at 6pm. The Royal Luau has entertained guests for more than four decades making it one of the longest running Oahu attractions on the island.

Many consider the Royal to have the best Hawaiian luau on Oahu due to its long-standing record of success. The exciting Hawaiian luau show kicks off with a lei and cocktail greeting and moves onto a sumptuous luau feast with all the customary fixings. The hour-long luau expresses Hawaiian traditions through ancient and modern hulas, heart-stopping Samoan fire and knife dancing and ends with the Tahitian hula and drum dancing.

Visitors wanting to experience a Hawaiian luau show can also choose from the exciting performance at the Polynesian Cultural Center or the Sea Life Park Luau. These shows have the added benefit of providing a variety of other entertainment for guests who choose to enjoy an afternoon at either of the venues. Attending an Oahu luau is one of the favorite things to do on the island. Each luau showcases the deeper meanings of Hawaiian traditions and affords an unforgettable experience during Hawaii holidays.
