The Boise Art Museum is one of the most intriguing cultural attractions in Idaho, and is in fact the only AAM accredited museum of art in the state of Idaho. Having been in existence since 1931, the Boise Idaho Art Museum continues to draw locals and travelers from out of state to its unique exhibits. In addition to special Boise Art Museum Glass Blowing, the museum hosts a wide collection of Basque Art and local Native American Art.
While the Boise Art Museum displays art from around the world, the center also has a strong focus on local art, particularly art from the Pacific Northwest. The Boise Idaho Art Museum's permanent collection includes over 2,300 works of art from 20th century American art. Ceramics in particular are a strong focus of the Boise Art Museum. The strong emphasis on local, somewhat modern art has also resulted in one of the nation's largest collections of glass blowing art. The Boise Art Museum glass blowing collection features a number of works by popular famous artists. In addition to the work on display, visitors can purchase Boise Art Museum glass blowing items in the museum shop located on the museum premises.
Although today the Boise Idaho Art Museum is one of
the more appealing attraction in Boise and throughout Idaho, it was not always so. When
the museum was first opened in 1931, it met in a local
hotel. Over the years, however, the museum organization
continued to grow in popularity and would in later years
receive federal and state grants, allowing the program
to expand. In 1961, the Boise Art Museum was finally
able to open as a non-profit organization, and it was
at this time that a professional staff was hired.
Over the years, the Boise Art Museum has expanded and is currently the most visited art museum in Idaho. Since 1986, the gallery has been housed in its own building, with expansions happening at different points over the years. The museum continues to focus on local artists, as well as on reflecting the high number of area residents from the Basque community in Europe. The museum also sponsors local art education.
If you are interested in visiting the Boise Museum of Art, note that general admission is $8 for an adult, with discounts offered for full-time students and seniors. Children under age 6 are free. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am until 5pm. Sundays the museum is open from noon to 5, and the museum is closed on Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Easter and Thanksgiving Day.
