Soldier Mountain

Soldier Mountain

Soldier Mountain Idaho is a popular ski resort located in central Idaho in the Sawtooth National Forest.  Co-owned by actor Bruce Willis, Soldier Mountain Resort looks to be expanding even further in the coming years.  Soldier Mountain Idaho first opened in 1948 and featured a rope tow as its main form of transport up the mountain.  Today, Soldier Mountain Idaho has two chairlifts and may add more in the future.

One of the unique features of the Soldier Mountain Resort is the option to engage in serious back-country skiing.  Back-country skiing at the Soldier Mountain Resort is serviced by snow cat vehicles through privately owned companies.  It is a good idea to properly assess your abilities and only engage in back-country skiing if you are an advanced or expert level skier.

The Soldier Mountain ski area has a base elevation of 5,800 feet and a pinnacle elevation of 7,200 feet.  The Soldier Mountain ski area covers about 1,150 acres, which includes all kinds of terrain.  Tree skiing, glades and bowls are all a part of the Soldier Mountain ski area experience.    Along with these back-country options, this Idaho ski location also has 15 regular runs which are frequently groomed.  This Idaho ski resort also has a full service lounge and cafeteria serving typical ski resort food.  An upstairs bar area serves more snacks as well as beer and wine.

Although this Idaho ski resort does have the capability to make snow, it is only open during the coldest winter months, which may change from year to year.  Be sure to check with the resort directly to find the most current information for the Soldier Mountain Resort.  In general, the Soldier Mountain ski resort operates Thursdays through Sundays during the winter, with an extended schedule during the winter holiday season.

Soldier Mountain Resort is located about 10 miles north of the town of Fairfield in Idaho, widely recognized as a very undeveloped section of the state.  Although some of the larger Idaho ski resorts like Sun Valley, Schweitzer and Silver Mountain may have more runs than Soldier Mountain, Soldier Mountain’s attraction lies in the many opportunities for fresh snow in the back-country.
