The Palmer House Hilton Chicago was first named The Palmer and was erected as a wedding gift for Potter Palmer's bride. Palmer was an American businessman who developed a large part of Chicago’s State Street. Palmer House was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire less than two weeks after it opened in 1871. Swiftly rebuilt by Palmer, it became one of the most upscale hotels in Chicago post-fire. The Palmer House Hotel, planned by architect Van Osdel, was constructed mainly with brick and iron and spanned seven stories. Completed in 1875, it was one of the most luxurious of all Chicago hotels and hosted many prominent political and business figures. During the 1920s, on the same property, a third hotel was built under the same name. It was further developed into a 25-story hotel over two years beginning in 1923. It was known as the biggest hotel in the world. Come the tail end of 1945, the Palmer House was purchased by Conrad Hilton and renamed the Palmer House Hilton. Hilton sold the hotel in 2005 and between 2007 and 2009 it was renovated yet again with a cost of more than $165 million. This brought its status up to Chicago’s second-largest hotel with almost 1,700 rooms, the Hyatt Regency being the largest. The hotel is now called the Palmer House - A Hilton Hotel.
