State Street Chicago

State Street in Chicago IL, located a few blocks from the Magnificent Mile, has had a long history as an entertainment and retail presence in the city. Over the years, State Street in downtown Chicago experienced economic hardships, and efforts were made to spruce up the area, even to the point of closing the streets to traffic in hopes of bringing in more business. However, the project failed, and the streets opened to traffic again.

One of the first stores to open on State Street in downtown Chicago is Macy's, which was Marshall Field's until 2006. The other anchor store that had been in business on State Street was Carson Pirie Scott, which closed its doors in 2006 after more than 100 years in business at the State Street location.

Not only have dining, shopping, and entertainment been the focus of State Street Chicago, it has also been a street filled with historical places to visit, such as the original Walnut Room at Macy's. The Harold Washington Public Library, built in 1991, was the world's largest library at the time of its opening, and the Reliance Building, featuring Chicago's architectural style, is a National Historic Landmark and City Landmark. The historic Berghoff Restaurant, which opened in 1898; Trader Vic's Restaurant, which opened in 1957; and the Billy Goat Tavern, originally opening in 1934 and moving to its current location in 1964, are all in business along State Street Chicago.

Currently, a new renovation is underway with the construction of the Block 37 mall housing numerous upscale shops. A variety of retail stores are already located on State Street in Chicago IL, including clothing stores, bookstores, and jewelry shops.
