South Bend Indiana

South Bend Indiana is an energetic community of around 100,000 residents in the northernmost part of the state. South Bend is situated near the Indiana border, and its position in the middle of the Indiana makes it just about equal in distance to both Ohio and Illinois. It is only about an hour-and-a-half drive to Chicago. It is the fourth largest city in Indiana and home to the University of Notre Dame. Perhaps the city’s most notable characteristic is the actual bend in the St. Joseph River, which runs through its core. The city takes its name from this bend.

South Bend is a destination where people of all ages can enjoy a range of activities, from arts and culture to sports and outdoor activities. Football Sundays are legendary in South Bend Indiana, as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have long been a formidable team in NCAA Division I football. If you are traveling to South Bend for a game or happen to be there during the season, there will be evidence of football mania everywhere. This is, after all, one of the most storied programs in college athletics. The campus of the University of Notre Dame is located just north of the downtown area, which is specifically situated in the north central portion of the city.

There is no shortage of opportunities for outdoors fun in South Bend either. The South Bend Parks and Recreation Department oversees some 50 parks and other recreation areas where people have access to trails, canoeing and rafting, fishing, and much more. The Potawatomi Zoo is the state’s oldest such institution and is also a fantastic place to enjoy the day with the entire family.

There are a wide variety of South Bend restaurants, especially in and around downtown, where you can enjoy many different kinds of cuisine after a day exploring the city. Walking around the downtown core is made more dramatic by the presence of the St. Joseph River.

South Bend is also a place to take in arts and culture. The South Bend Museum of Art, the Studebaker National Museum, and The Center for History comprise a short list of the most prominent institutions in the city. You may also choose to enjoy the South Bend Symphony Orchestra at the Morris Performing Arts Center. There are also a number of engaging plays staged at the South Bend Civic Theatre on Main Street downtown. There are buses and taxis, but this Midwestern town is primarily made for driving. The South Bend Regional Airport services flights to about ten different regional destinations.

You should not have much trouble locating a suitable room or suite at one of the many South Bend Indiana hotels, but if you plan to travel during the football season, it is especially worth noting that you should make your arrangements well in advance. The majority of the hotels within the city limits are to be found around the downtown core and close to campus. If you have to make plans late in the game you can always stay at one of the accommodations in neighboring Mishawaka.
