If you are taking a vacation in Kentucky this summer, be prepared to be amazed at the extensive Kentucky caves that lay beneath the surface of the Bluegrass State. Mammoth Cave is the world’s largest cave system with over 300 miles of documented passageways. The cave is so large that many researchers suspect there are hundreds of miles of cave that haven’t even been discovered. Mammoth Cave National Park is sure to make for an exciting day trip as you explore the natural wonder of the cavern and learn about Kentucky cave history.


The world’s largest cave system features miles of Kentucky hiking trails that can be explored on a tour with an experienced guide. Learn about what geologic processes took place to make Mammoth Cave the behemoth it is today and discover new facts about Kentucky history as it relates to the cave. You may see Native American artifacts that were left behind when they explored the caves hundreds of years ago. Cave tours take place in the summer, winter, and spring. Most of the tours can last up to two and a half hours, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes that are fit for hiking in Kentucky parks.


Why not rest your head at one of the comfortable Kentucky campgrounds near Mammoth Park. The Mammoth Cave campground features 105 campsites near the Nolin River complete with a picnic table and a fire ring. Don’t expect anything fancy at the campground in terms of amenities. Although there are modern restroom facilities, there is no electricity. With the beautiful scenery and great Kentucky hiking trails, however, you won’t even miss it. Reservations are recommended if you plan to visit the Mammoth Park campground between May and September. These summer months are the most popular times for Kentucky tourism and are also ideal times to explore Kentucky caves.


Even if you do decide to visit Mammoth Park in the winter, rest assure that the climate usually stays nice and cool during the daytime. The nights can get down to a chilly 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is best to be prepared for any type of weather.


You can also stay at the Mammoth Cave Hotel on your Kentucky trip to the caves. This lodging option features Kentucky cabin rentals or more traditional rooms that can comfortably sleep 2-4 people. The Kentucky accommodation is located right at the entrance of Mammoth Cave National Park, so you won’t have far to go for a fun day of exploring.


Boating and kayaking on Kentucky rivers are relaxing ways to spend your time at Mammoth Cave National Park. The Green River and the Nolin River are stocked with all sorts of fish, from perch to blue gills. You can cross the rivers on two different ferries. Be sure to research restrictions on catching fish before going fishing at the state park.


You won’t have to look hard for things to do at Mammoth Park, the world’s largest cave system. From exploring Kentucky caves to going hiking and horse back riding, the state park truly has it all.
