Beaches in Maine

Every year, the sandy beaches in Maine are a primary tourist attraction. However, even with the influx of visitors each summer, the beaches in Maine are noted for their lack of crowds. If you enjoy clean sand and clear water, you should definitely consider a summer vacation on one of the many lovely beaches in Maine.

The popular local Maine beaches on the southern coast include Old Orchard Beach, Saco, Biddeford, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Wells, Ogunquit, York, Kittery, and South Berwick. In Saco, Ferry Beach State Park is located off Maine Route 9 on Bay View Road. This is one of the local Maine beaches that have a somewhat interesting history. Before highways were common in the areas north of Boston, beaches were able to provide travelers with safe and easy transportation routes. A ferry crossing at nearby Saco River was responsible for serving beach travelers. This is how Ferry Beach State Park got its name.

Hills Beach in Biddeford is one of the local Maine beaches popular with the town's residents. It is located next to the University of New England. Since it is in a residential area, you will need to pay the town for a parking permit. Hills Beach is also a popular bird watching location.

If your Maine beach vacation is all about romance and seclusion, take your significant other to Goose Rocks Beach. This Maine beach is devoid of amusement park rides, tee shirt shops or carnival games. However, you will find two pristine, crescent–shaped beaches with soft, silvery white sand. If you enjoy searching for sea shells, you can find silver dollar shells along the southern half of this Maine beach.

In contrast to Goose Rocks, if you are looking for a Maine beach that has some action, you will enjoy the area known as Kennebunk Beach. Kennebunk Beach is actually composed of three beaches: Gooch Beach, Middle Beach and Mother’s Beach. Gooch Beach is popular with beachcombers, castle builders, body surfers, sun seekers, swimmers and skim boarders. Middle Beach is a bit rockier. However, the sidewalk along its stretch makes it a popular destination for bikers, walkers and rollerbladers. Mother’s Beach is the smallest of the three. With its lower tide and playground on the premises, it is a popular Maine beach for families.

For many years, the shores of Wells Beach, Maine have lured visitors who come in search of sand, surf and sea. This breathtakingly beautiful Maine beach is located on a barrier island. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and salt marsh on the other. During high tide, Wells Beach has water on both sides.
