Maine Fishing

Whether you are embarking on a solitary Maine fly fishing trip or engaging the helpful services of a Maine fishing guide, it is important to be knowledgeable about the Maine fishing license requirements. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's licensing system is called MOSES. You can purchase your license online at https://www.informe.org/moses/. You will be required to keep your license with you at all times while fishing or transporting fish and you must show it to any warden, department employee, guide or landowner upon request. The Maine fly fishing laws will vary somewhat from county to county. Be sure to check the rules and regulations before you head out.

Some of the best Maine fly fishing can be found at the Rapid River, which boasts an average brook trout weighing two to three pounds. If you are a salmon lover, excellent Maine fly fishing can be found on the West Branch of the Penobscot River.

Are you interested in Maine ice fishing? If so, you will be pleased to know that the state sponsors free Maine ice fishing on the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding President’s Day each year. Any person, except those whose license has been revoked or suspended, may fish on these days without a license.

Shaker Pond in Alfred is an excellent Southern Maine ice fishing location. It is famous for its abundance of bass and pickerel. If you are interested in brook trout or landlocked salmon, the Moosehead Lake region provides superb Maine ice fishing. There are some “ice shacks” available to protect you from the sometimes artic weather conditions.

The Maine ice fishing season runs from January 1st through March 31st. For safety, ice has to be six inches thick for a party of people and at least two inches thick for a single person. If you would rather participate in your sport during the warmer seasons, you will probably enjoy deep sea fishing in Maine.

The deep sea fishing in Maine season usually runs from May to October, depending on weather conditions. Throughout the entire state a number of boat charter companies operate excursions for deep sea fishing in Maine.
