Maine Lobster

Maine Lobster

Many centuries ago, Maine lobsters were so prolific that the Native Americans engaged their services to fertilize their fields. Occasionally, the Maine lobster also served as fishing bait. Throughout the years, Maine lobsters gained popularity as a delicacy. In fact the demand for Maine lobsters was so high, that by 1836, lobsters were canned. The Burnham & Morrill Company, currently in the baked beans business, had one of the earliest Maine lobster canneries. According to an 1880 history of Cumberland Maine, the Burnham & Morrill Company shipped the canned Maine lobsters to all parts of the world.

Since Maine lobsters were regarded as a delicacy, its meat was not rationed during World War II. It thus provided many people with a suitable protein-rich food. This increased the popularity of lobster fishing in Maine. When men returned from the War, a GI Bill funded some of the start up costs for veterans interested in lobster fishing in Maine.

If you are fascinated with the idea of lobster fishing in Maine and think you would like to try it, think again. The Maine lobster industry is a hierarchal system that is based on an individual's skill and family ties. Lobster Gangs of Maine, by James Acheson tells of the lobster gangs that defend their fishing territory in Maine’s waters. If this statement has you humming the theme song from the Sopranos, you are on the right track. However, there are a few recreational cruises that will allow you to observe the lobster fishing process. Some might even allow you to participate.

If you would rather steer clear of the lobster fishing process, we can’t say we blame you. However, it is possible to have live Maine lobster delivered right to your home. Most companies will price the lobsters daily at market price. When you have live Maine lobster delivered, it will arrive in an insulated box with seaweed and frozen gel packs.

At this point, you may be wondering why anyone would want a live Maine lobster delivered to their home! The reason is simple. Lobsters spoil rapidly when they die. To get the best taste, you need to cook them while they are still alive.

If you choose to spend some time getting to know your lobster before you savor its meat, there are places where you can buy live Maine lobster directly. Many folks rave about the Pine Point Fisherman's Co-op, which is also known as the Lobster Co-op, in Scarborough, Maine. Of course, it goes without saying that you will only want to buy live Maine lobster while on vacation if you are traveling home by car. Remember, you will need to cook them immediately when you return home!
